      Do you provide airfare?

        Do you provide airfare?

Depends on the size of the artist. If it is someone like Desyn Masiello, Dave Seaman or James Lavelle they come and play for the cost of a plane ticket and not for profit. Others come and play for free. Those nights have no door cover.

So... someone who could probably afford the airfare, you'll pay for... but small-time jobbies like me have to pay our own way... AND not get paid? So sadly San Francisco.

I guess some people value the SF experience over others, as with any major city.

I don't think there is anything sad about San Francisco at all. It depends on if you want to build a name for yourself in our town. People who have paid their own way and have built a name and following in town now get paid. People are happy to come pay $5 for an artist that they know is going to cost way more any where else. If we have a no name out of town guest we don't charge money its just that simple.
              Bottom line:
Its fun to play for a crowd that is really in to what you are doing. This is what we provide.

Hear ya there. In Iowa it's hard to find a crowd who wants to hear anything aside from house, d'n'b, or pys trance.

Let's face it when you are an unknown it is pretty hard to get someone to put you on a plane. But once you are in a town or country and if you have a rep you can usually get booked. Take Romanina, there is no way in hell a promoter there would put someone from the states on a plane unless they are one of the top 50 djs in the world. I went to Romania on my dime and eneded up headlining at the biggest clubs on the weekends. Between all the gigs I played it payed for my flight and lodging.
Its just something you need to think about doing as a dj. Its not just a San Francisco thing.

"I don't think there is anything sad about San Francisco at all. ..."

Well said. I'm glad you have no sad experiences in San Francisco. I let my own sad past experiences taint my reaction to this thread, and for that I apologize. I LOVE San Francisco. And of course I recognize the value of any opportunity to play out. I still don't think that value justifies not paying a dj. We should all be compensated for our efforts.

When I was promoting, I would never expect nor ask anyone to dj for free. Perhaps that's part of why I never made any money in promotion... but that's just me. If any money was made, everyone got their share... even if it was just cab fare. I don't believe in the myth of the starving artist. The artists need to be paid just like the managers and cleaning crews.

But, again, I apologize for my negative spin. I hope all the right people take advantage of this opportunity and turn it into a beautifully positive experience that is beneficial to all involved.

...is how i play in europe.

                          however i DO get paid.

i will admit that generally the gigs i have guest djs on i pay them in alcohol--however, that's true of ALL my djs, not just up & comers. on the other hand, i don't charge a door fee.
